I have always had dry skin, there is eczema and asthma in the family. I use cetraben emolliant cream. Recently my back has become quite scaley and the skin is a bit sort of broken, in lines at times, until it heals again. It does get itchy and a bit sore. Sorry, not the best explanation!! Initially just thought it was probably a bit of eczema, but it has just come to mind that it could be drug related and wondered if anyone else has had skin problems with drugs. Have not seen anyone about it, as the skin seems to heal again on its own, but then in a few days its back again. Any ideas? Zena x

Hi Zena. I have a similar thing with the skin on my fingers and palms. The skin goes dry and scaly and feels very rough. When it gets really bad the skin peels off completely. I think it's an autoimmune process rather than drug related as it first became a problem during my first severe flare up and that was before I started drug treatment. Naomi, XXX

sorry just caught up, i have the skin thing also, i tend to be carefull of soaps as it dries up my skin,i always have a liquid soap with moisturiser in it,i find the palmolive best for me,my gp told me that washing alot or bath/showers takes the oils out of the skin and can make it go thin,i must admit i did cut down and seems better for me,i do notice changes if i have been in any kind of soapy or otherwise water, good luck, dorothy

Hi everyone I have excema.....have a large pump container on prescription called diprobase (soaks in fantastic). When I had baths I used to have aquabase on prescription to slap on in the bath....you can buy it in chemists now, I don't use it because I don't bath anymore (shower)! Recently I had bad itchy legs scale like flaking and slapped on the diprobase, it cleared up but the skin was slightly marked from my scratching the itchy areas - all ok at the month. Just cracked hands & fingers (slap lots on hands when bed and marrigolds on top) my rubber gloves on washing up with the cream is like a pamper session for my hands! When they crack they bleed I do have something cringing going on on my right foot fungal infection my my nails, spent lots of money to get scholl anti fungal infection. After showering I "paint my nails" who cares if I over do and paint my toes as well!!!! Ohhh my tip after bath/showering is avon so soft oil spray - doesn't annoy the skin and people from work say its an anti mozzie spray as well!!!

I have dry skin too which has got a bit drier since RA (but it could be my age too) - I use baby oil straight away after getting out of the shower, while the skin is still wet. It's easier to spread all over than body cream and very quick to do, then you dry off as normal (and no it doesn't make the towel gooey) and my skin looks and feels a bit more moisturised. Then if I have time I put body lotion on the arms and legs and give myself a massage, but I quite often am too rushed to do that! Baby oil is quite cheap and lasts a long time and can buy it in any supermarket, so very convenient. Sylvia xx Be kinder than is necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Thankyou all for your thoughts. I only use surecare wash powder, non bio and perfume free, though Morrisons and Tesco have both just stopped selling it so don't know what to buy next. The wash type lotion sounds good for the shower, might try to get it on prescription. I do use perfume free soap, but do love my dove shower creams!! Will stop using it for a while. I'm using mtx inj. hydroxy and abatercept, I will ask about possible side sffects from any of these but perhaps it just another thing brought on by R.A. Will try the aveeno creamy oil too. Thanks Zena xx

Hi everyone, just an update, I recently asked G.P. about the dry, scaly itchy skin when there for something else. She said it may be ra, but seemed to think its more likely to be drug related. Will ask about it at my next infusion visit. She has given me Dermol 500 lotion to wash with to go with the Cetraben cream that I already use. Has started to feel less irritable already. Thanks Zena x
